As we rode out to gather for branding yesterday, fog was settling in from nearly every direction. One appreciated the Pendleton wool coats and Carhartt jackets that were the apparel of the early daylight hours. Riding the the nearly two mile stretch to the far end of the pasture made for good conversation time as well as silent reflection.

The newcomers quickly learned their way about and soon felt at home. The Homestead Act of 1862 provided them, as well as many other pioneers, with an opportunity to acquire land and establish family farms.
